Enduring Question

Are you just the reflection in the window
of sunset and clouds, adrift?
After all the years, so many words,
languages, students – gifts?

Do the classic questions endure for you –
about the Bible, theology, reformation,
and Jefferson’s Jesu?

Or, are you looking through the window
at those old trees, younger than you?
Are they feeble now,
and waiting for Fauré to renew?

Teaching is the best way to learn,
but Oh! the enabling accommodations and managing expectations!
Will you again, come and go, or never return?

Or will you look through the window and past the trees,
take the 7 steps to that Canadian isle
and the 8 ways that frees
your ashes from this earth?

Will you sing again?
Feel the joy of Thompson?
What is YOUR enduring question?
Are you looking out for it or in?
Will you have the answer then?
