alone I stand
as I watch light
fight a losing battle

night’s charcoal
fangs sink into
the sun’s flesh

a web of black
is spun
across the sky
being thrown down
by the smoking beasts
their ominous
brick bodies
blocking my last
glimpse of hope

the warm
calming flames
lick my fingers
for the last time
as I become
engulfed
